Message from Mai
|
Dear Hoteliers,
Welcome to our July Check-In newsletter. As we've happily reported to our travel agency members, the remainder of 2007 is forecasted to bring a busy market for hotels. There's good news regarding the high demand for rooms, according to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report, and sales growth for all major hotels, according to a U.S. Lodging Report by Ernst & Young.
More good news is the steadily growing number of our travel agent members booking on the CCRA Booking Portal. Our monthly IATA List also continues to grow. In June, 648 more agents signed up to start booking on the portal. This growth in new portal users follows our successful Spring tradeshow season and increased training outreaches. Each month this year, the number of agents booking on the CCRA portal has increased, and we anticipate more sign-ups following our appearance at the Vacation.com Annual Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans (read on for details).
The CCRA Booking Portal is where your property can stand out with your highlighted partner listing, the option of destination banner ads, and being presented to our travel agent members with the endorsement of quality and value that CCRA partnership provides. To be sure your property benefits fully, please remember that your rates and all your special offers must be loaded in the GDS so agents can locate them.
I’d also like to share successful 2007 sales trends, for consideration in your 2008 RFP season plans. As our consortia partners and agency members have attested in this and previous newsletters, Travel Agents are interested in offering their clients unsurpassed value and they seek this out when choosing travel products for their clients. They look for rates that are not only better than published rates but also include additional value adds like breakfast, upgrade upon availability or welcome amenity. “BAR minus” rates are gaining new popularity. Discounted pricing below Best Available Rate has been more widely adopted this year by many of our top chains. The successful strategy makes an impact among our travel agency market. A discounted rate below BAR is an attractive reward for power bookers, building booking loyalty in a competitive space. Please contact your RFP provider for more information on how to participate in the 2008 CCRA International Hotel Program or click here to go to our hotel partners page and submit your application on-line.
Read on for this issue’s interview with the president of the National Association of Commissioned Travel Agents, and an introduction to our new Directors of Supplier Strategies, Bill Lawrence and Nora Britch, who bring to CCRA many years of experience in the hospitality and travel industries.
Sincerely,
Mai Meyaart

Trade Association Spotlight - NACTA President, Joanie Ogg
|
This month, CCRA checked in with industry leader Joanie Ogg, CTC, MCC, who is President of the National Association of Commissioned Travel Agents (NACTA) representing over 3,000 travel agent professionals. Joanie has been named "Travel Agent of the Year," and was awarded the Travel Industry Lifetime Achievement Award by Travel Trade Publications in 2003 and 2005 She is a regularly featured speaker at industry conventions and has chaired The Travel Institute's National Forum. Here are her insights.
Q: What is the current profile of NACTA’s membership?
A: As NACTA continues to grow we also continue to retain long-time members who realize the value the membership brings to the success of their businesses. When members renew their NACTA membership it is proof positive that we are staying on top of their needs and bringing value. As a result of this, NACTA's membership base features very seasoned and tenured agents along with the newer entries to our great business.
Q: Are there changes in how travel agents book hotels today?
A: Agents today realize more than ever that time is money, and therefore the use of online booking programs is key to their successful time management. As technology continues to evolve the NACTA members are on board to stay on their game having the tools and the knowledge to use them efficiently. There is an ongoing desire for training tips and information sharing on the best booking practices.
Q: What types of hotel sales programs appeal to travel agents?
A: All-inclusive pricing is very popular for leisure and vacation markets. Packages that include breakfast or special amenities, that are well identified within the online booking tools, will make booking one property a more enticing choice over another.
Q: What advantages should a supplier try to offer to agents?
A: Education is always the key. Helping agents stay up to date on property changes and supplier product enhancements is effective. Those suppliers that offer agents continual product update information will have more success building loyalty to their brand.
Q: How can hotels drive travel agent bookings - what programs do you think are appealing?
A: Incentive-based programs where an agent can feel the perks at the time of booking ads excitement to the booking experience, and I think that influences booking decisions.
Q: How can travel agents compete with online consumer travel sites?
A: This is honestly no longer a consideration for most members of NACTA. While a couple of years ago, consumers thought booking air and hotels and perhaps even cruises online was the end-all solution. The growing percentage of unhappy clients who did not perhaps choose what they really needed or expected have come running back to their travel professionals for true service.
Q: How does today’s travel agent professional harness the power of the Web?
A: By using it all the time! The Internet is the best tool we were ever given. It enables travel professionals to sort through the myriad of content and bring the client just what they want and need. Online research and booking tools, especially a comprehensive all-in-one tool like the CCRA Booking Portal, make agents more efficient every day. |

CCRA
|
CCRA was pleased to once again meet with agents nationwide at the 9th Annual Vacation.com Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans, with 14 of our top suppliers on hand presenting a lively CCRA Partner Pavilion. Over 600 agencies attended the event from June 27 – July 1, 2007.
In addition to hosting visitors in our Trade Show Partner Pavilion, CCRA conducted five classroom training sessions Wednesday through Friday, on how to make more money booking hotels on the CCRA portal. CCRA also presented one-on-one demos to hundreds of agents throughout the week in the Vacation.com Experience Room, an exclusive for Vacation.com preferred supplier partners.
The Power of Partnership was a resonating theme for this year’s conference and for our President and CEO, Dic Marxen, who addressed a general session to Vacation.com members about the hotel booking advantages offered to Vacation.com agents through their preferred supplier partnership with CCRA. Marxen’s message was clear. With the CCRA booking portal inventory of worldwide hotels, or through the CCRA rate code in the GDS, Vacation.com agents can make more money booking hotels.
Our CCRA presenters reported that they had the most enthusiastic crowd they have ever experienced, eager to learn the latest features and booking tips on the CCRA portal. We look forward to watching the growing booking rates in the coming months, as our marketing to the Vacation.com membership remains in high gear throughout the year.
CCRA would like to especially congratulate the 14 participating suppliers who joined us for the successful trade show pavilion, where Vacation.com agents were excited to win gifts and prize drawings, plus jump in the live Money Machine. Check out the event photos.
Many thanks to our 2007 Vacation.com Partner Pavilion sponsors for your support.
